Why are my investments not performing?

The views expressed below are widely accepted, long term investment principles. It is extremely difficult to predict short term movements in stock markets. Attempting to do so is considered to be "market timing" and is frowned upon due to the difficulties of getting it right - and right consistently. My personal view is to eliminate the loss of value when markets are unstable by selecting an investment with lower share exposure. As can be seen in the second graph below, your capital is better protected in a "stable", low share portfolio. When choosing this strategy, it must be remembered that it is not a long term solution, but rather a short term protection. When normality returns to the market - move back into your long term investment strategy.

When relatively small differences in annual returns are compounded over some years, they make a major difference to the total long-term return on investment.
Here's a graphic illustration, based on a R10,000 lumpsum. The lower blue line shows compounded returns at an annual 5%, the top indigo line shows them at 25% annually.
Over 40 years there is about 1000 times greater difference in the total value of the investment.
This table illustrates the same point:
Years | 0 | 5 | 10 | 20 | 30 | 40 |
annual return | ||||||
5% | 10000 | 12763 | 16289 | 26533 | 43219 | 70400 |
10% | 10000 | 16105 | 25937 | 67275 | 174494 | 452593 |
15% | 10000 | 20114 | 40456 | 163665 | 662118 | 2678635 |
20% | 10000 | 24883 | 61917 | 383376 | 2373763 | 14697716 |
25% | 10000 | 30518 | 93132 | 867362 | 8077936 | 75231638 |
The effect of compounding on returns should be borne in mind when choosing the classes of assets to invest in. Let's take a look at what the average long term returns of these classes are.
